The Phase-Walkers
Every choice adds a voice to the symphony of self.
Core Concept
A species that exists partially out of phase with conventional reality, perceiving the world not as a solid state, but as a superposition of possibilities. They embody the tension between potential and actuality.
Physiology & Biology
Their bodies are dark, semi-corporeal forms that seem to blur at the edges, like a heat haze or a glitch in spacetime. They do not walk through a space so much as resolve into a position within it.
Psychology & Society (Faith / Fiction)
Core Faith: “The Unchosen Path is Real.” They believe that every decision point creates a branching reality, and they retain a psychic “scent” of the paths not taken. For them, a choice is not a finality but a temporary commitment to one of many equally valid realities.
Core Fiction: Their myths do not speak of heroes who made the right choice, but of “Echo-Weavers” who could draw upon the skills and knowledge of their alternate selves from paths not taken.
Gameplay Hooks & Tensions
The Subjective Interface for a Silhouette would be unique. When faced with a major choice, the player might see ghostly, semi-transparent overlays of the potential outcomes playing out simultaneously.
A unique racial ability could be to “Attune to an Echo,” allowing them to temporarily gain a bonus to a skill they would have learned had they made a different choice in their past.
Their central struggle is with decisiveness. Committing too strongly to a single, linear path feels like a form of self-mutilation to them, cutting off their access to the realm of possibility.
