Architectures of Creation
The act of creation in ATET is not technologically neutral. It is a profound expression of a culture’s core philosophy, a Faith made manifest in steel, flesh, or light. These differing worldviews give rise to four distinct Technological Archetypes, or “flavors” of creation. Each Archetype is a different answer to the fundamental question: “What is the ‘right’ way to impose will upon the universe?”
These are not rigid tech trees, but a palette of possibilities. A pragmatic society might use what works, while a dogmatic one might see the use of a “foreign” technology as a profound heresy. The true master, the Eidonon, learns the language of all four, and can even attempt the dangerous art of weaving them together.
1. Mechanical (The Hegemonic Style)
- Core Philosophy: “The universe is a machine to be understood and mastered. A problem is a set of physical laws to be leveraged. The ideal tool is reliable, repairable, and robust.”
- Aesthetics & Materials: The familiar language of industry. Steel, titanium, gears, pistons, wires, and hydraulics. The sounds are of the forge, the factory, and the engine room. It is grounded, tangible, and often brutally efficient.
- Mechanics & Resources: Primarily powered by
Electricity
orCombustion
. It is governed by the laws of physics. Its primary challenge is entropy:[Metal Fatigue]
,[Rust]
, and[Component Burnout]
. It requires constant Assembly & Maintenance. - Ideological Alignment: The Hegemony, The Mechanist, pragmatic scavengers, and any culture with a Faith in empirical, material reality.
2. Biological (The Arborian Method)
- Core Philosophy: “The universe is a garden to be cultivated. A problem is an ecological imbalance to be harmonized. The ideal tool is grown, not built; it is a partner, not a slave.”
- Aesthetics & Materials: The language of life. Living wood, chitin, sinew, bone, and symbiotic organisms. “Machines” are living creatures, and structures are grown. The sounds are of creaking wood, chittering insects, and flowing fluids.
- Mechanics & Resources: Powered by
Sunlight
,Water
, andNutrients
. It is governed by the laws of biology. Its primary challenge is mortality:[Blight]
,[Disease]
,[Parasitic Infestation]
, and[Predation]
. It can often self-repair, but is vulnerable to sickness and requires active Cultivation. - Ideological Alignment: Arborians, Loam-Kindred, and cultures with a deep reverence for the natural world.
3. Psionic (The Esoteric Art)
- Core Philosophy: “The universe is a thought to be focused. A problem is a dissonant narrative to be harmonized. The ideal tool has no moving parts; it is pure will given temporary form.”
- Aesthetics & Materials: The language of metaphysics. Crystallized light, focused sound, shimmering force-fields, and impossible geometry. Technology is silent, clean, and often deeply uncanny.
- Mechanics & Resources: Powered directly by Eidos,
Psychic Energy
, or theWillpower
of its user. It is governed by the laws of narrative and resonance. Its primary challenge is instability:[Resonance Decay]
,[Psychic Static]
, and corruption from hostile, intrusive thoughts. - Ideological Alignment: Advanced esoteric cults, ancient precursor races, and high-tier Eidolons.
4. Interpersonal (The Social Engine)
- Core Philosophy: “The universe is a society to be organized. A problem is a conflict of wills to be negotiated. The ideal tool is a motivated, skilled, and loyal community.”
- Aesthetics & Materials: The language of humanity (and sapience). The bustling workshop, the organized construction site, the communal farm. The materials are whatever the workers can use, but the true “material” is the social fabric itself.
- Mechanics & Resources: Powered by
Morale
,Loyalty
,Trust
, andCompensation
. It is governed by the laws of psychology and sociology. Its primary challenge is dissent:[Strikes]
,[Rebellion]
,[Sabotage]
, and[Factional Dispute]
. It requires constant social “maintenance” in the Social Arena. - Ideological Alignment: This is the default “technology” for most organic societies, from the communal Homestead to the tyrannical Plantation.
The Fifth Archetype: Synthesis
The ultimate expression of mastery is not in choosing one path, but in combining them. A true genius or heretic can create Hybrid Systems that bridge these different philosophies. This requires deep knowledge of multiple disciplines and often involves crafting unique Interface Components. A [Bio-Mechanical Gearbox]
that translates the slow, powerful growth of a plant into mechanical rotation. A [Psionic Governor]
that allows a psion to mentally guide a workforce. These hybrid creations are often the most powerful and unique objects in the Tapestry, and the stories of their creation are the stuff of legend.
