The Sovereign We
Unity through Will, not by Nature.
Core Concept
The Synod rejects both the involuntary, undifferentiated unity of the Mycelian Chorus, and the paranoid isolation of the Solipsids. They are a synthetic collective; a network of fiercely individual minds who have chosen to link. Their unity is not a biological fact but a continuous, willed political act. “We” is a consensus that must be constantly negotiated and re-affirmed by every “I.”
Physiology & Biology
Their physical forms are often modular and cybernetic, or possess a biology that allows for temporary psychic or physical merging. A single “node” is a fully sovereign individual. Multiple nodes can link to form a “Chorus,” a composite being that shares processing power and sensory data but critically, does not share a single consciousness. Decision-making is a near-instantaneous process of internal voting or debate among the linked nodes.
Psychology & Society (Faith / Fiction)
Core Faith: "" They see the Mycelian Chorus as a primitive, un-chosen state of being. True, enlightened collectivity is a pact, not a fusion. Their greatest social virtue is “Fidelity,” the act of upholding the consensus; and their greatest crime is “Dissonance,” acting against the will of the Chorus one is linked to.
Core Fiction: Their founding myth is not of a creation, but of an escape. They tell the story of the “First Five,” a group of |Mycelian avatars who were severed from the Weave and, instead of going mad, forged the first Synod through a pact of mutual survival, discovering a higher form of unity in their shared freedom.
Gameplay Hooks & Tensions
A player Incarnation might be a single Synod node. Quests would revolve around finding compatible nodes to link with, increasing your power and capabilities but also inheriting the Goals and Needs of your new partners.
Internal politics are a core mechanic. A Chorus might be paralyzed by indecision if its constituent nodes have a tied vote on a critical action. A player might need to persuade other nodes within their own collective body to agree to a course of action.
